I just finished writing a post for a community I'm in that I'm pretty proud of, so I thought I'd pimp it. Chex it out, if you're interested:
A scriptual and ethical defense of family planning
*sigh* I wish I had the energy to write a response to the election angst. I am deeply upset by the distress among so many of my friends over the outcome. I...I'm at a loss for words. I have so many thoughts rolling around in my head. I'm angry at some of the things that have been said. I sympathize deeply with others. Other things I find sadly ironic. I hope I will be able to formulate my thoughts into a post at some point, because many of the things on my heart have been overlooked, I think, by the deluge of post-election posts. I've seen a rant here, an analysis there, an accusation here, and a manifesto there--and all of them fail to address some very important points, I think, about what went down last Tuesday.

good arguments, in my persp.
Date: 2004-11-07 02:47 am (UTC)Good arguments, biblically and contextually sound (even a trinitarian connection!).
I like your approach on family planning, as well.
glad to see you still have a few moments to share your thoughts with the world!

Date: 2004-11-07 03:26 am (UTC)I do have an IUD, and I chose that route because after each child, I had major post partum depression and went on anti- depressants. Having more chemicals/hormones ingested/injected into my body was not a good thing for me (as they tended to make me more depressed). I needed to have something non-chemical but easy and mostly fool proof. We had a few mishaps with condoms to know that was not the safest route, and the other types of birth control were such a big hassle. Choosing an IUD seemed like the best choice, and it really has been for me. I've never regretted it.
I'm not ready to have more children, and I'm beginning to get the feeling that two children are probably all I'll have, because that's about all I can handle and still have time to focus on serving others, etc.
I just wanted you to know what my experience has been with this. Thanks for letting me share.

Date: 2004-11-07 04:19 am (UTC)Actually, I did a bit more research, and I think I may not have been quite right about the IUD. Even as I was typing that, I thought, "I'm not 100% sure it works only by preventing implantation." Your comment prompted me to check it out a little more closely. It turns out...they're not really sure how it works. Heh. But many of the sites I looked at mentioned that it does seem to have mechanisms of preventing fertilization as well as preventing implantation. So, if that's the case, then it's really more like hormonal birth control than like abortion. Also, even if it does work only by preventing implantation, I still don't think it quite measures up to surgical abortion, or chemical abortions a la RU-486.
Anyway, I do understand that it's a more practical method of birth control for women who have problems with BC pills. Personally, though, I don't think I could use it unless I had greater assurance that it prevented pregnancy primarily by preventing conception.
Thanks for reading and commenting on my essay. :)

Date: 2004-11-07 02:22 pm (UTC)It is thought that the body reacts to the IUD, causing an inflammatory reaction in the inside lining of the womb. There is also evidence that the copper oxidises in the womb altering the environment in the uterus. Both these effects impede the movement of both the sperm and egg, as well as reducing their viability.
Which makes sense to me. An interesting note is that a plastic UID in Australia apprently only works if it releases chemicals into the uterus. That suggest to me that the copper really does change the uterus to make it an inimical environment to sperm and fertilization.
